Answers to All Your Questions about the Jewish Treble Choral Project.
What Will Be the First Projects?
Our first projects are a professional trio as well as a new community choir.
Can I Be In the Community Choir?
Yes you can! As long as you sing alto or soprano, have had enough music education to read basic sheet music, are able to independently learn parts with the help of recordings, and are able to accurately match pitch and hold your own harmony, you are welcome! All genders are invited as long as you are prepared to communicate, learn and share in a primarily female and non-binary atmosphere.
How do I Join and Where Do You Rehearse?
Auditions were already held for this season at the end of October. If you are interested in auditioning for next season or are an advanced enough reader to join us mid-season, please email the director, Diane Rose at dbor@mac.com or text or call 310-714-4407. Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings at St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Mar Vista.
Do I Have to Be Jewish to Join?
Absolutely not! Please just be comfortable with exploring Jewish culture with us.
Can I be in the Professional Trio?
For now, the trio is made up of 3 friends who have already been singing together for a long time. However if we choose to expand the group, we will invite others to audition.
What Exactly is "Jewish Music" Anyway?
Jewish music can be works written by a composer who identifies as Jewish, use a text written by a poet who identifies as Jewish, be based on traditional or modern Jewish religious prayers or texts, utilize historically Jewish languages such as Hebrew, Yiddish or Ladino, or can simply somehow tell a Jewish story. There are many Christmas songs written by Jews, and we might sing them all!
Who Will Be Directing This Choir?
Diane Rose is a Cantor, Humanistic Rabbi and Choral Conductor. Her first career was as a choir director. She was the music educator at Fairfax High School and Ramona Convent Secondary School. She directed community choirs both at UCLA and at Beth Shir Shalom. She founded and directed the Namaste Women's Choir. She has sung with many groups, most recently with Vox Femina. She has a master's of music degree from Cal State Los Angeles in choral conducting. Diane is also educated as a cantor and was privately trained for ordination. She received her rabbinic ordination from Jewish Spiritual Leaders Institute, but after a deep shift in her beliefs, she is now back in school to be ordained as a humanistic rabbi. She leads a small humanistic chavurah (www.sm-jhc.org), and has a master's of Jewish studies degree from AJRCA with a focus on music in Jewish life. Diane has worked as a cantor or spiritual leader for the last 15 years. Diane brings her Jewish knowledge as a humanistic rabbi/cantor and her music education together for this unique project.
